My Own Fuzzy Math
OK, so we are having a debate about giving the upper echelons of socirty huge tax breaks. Why?Because according to Republicans, such tax breaks allow for further investment in American companies, which means more jobs. I know lots of people who do not make anywhere near $200,000 a year or more who buy into this notion.
The idea seems to be:
Tax Breaks to the Rich = More Investment = Money to Expand = More Jobs = A Larger GNP
But watching companies for the last ten years or so, the true equation seems to be
Tax Breaks for the Rich = More Investment = Higher Stock Prices = More Money for Investors (aka The Rich).
Bush' job creation plan is to trust companies to expand their companies and hire American jobs. But this is a ridiculous notion. US companies have shown time and time again that they will happily screw over their employees if they think it will raise their stock proce a quarter dollar. If it will mean raising their stock portfolio, companies will move operations overseas and employ people for pennies a day. A corporation's only loyalty is to its stockholders, the vast majority of which are the same wealthy getting tax cuts.
Am I wrong? Am I missing a step somewhere? Help me figure out why people trust US corporations...
